Professional writing, editing, metal finishing, and consultation for bespoke individual or company needs, for a variety of professions, including Manufacturing, Arboriculture, and Architecture.
Do you not have a way with words? MWC provides writing and editing services, covering a range of professions and writing styles, to suit your individual or company needs.
Need some clear instructions or descriptions for your products, but tend to waffle a bit? MCW can assist you with communicating complex information in simpler formats.
MWC provides editing services on top of the writing service, but I also edit work provided to me from a variety of sectors, if you'd like an extra set of eyes on your final piece.
Want some help creating 'engaging content' for your accounts? Tired of the jargon? MWC can help you increase your presence and attract new people online.
Perhaps you have better things to do, like running the company, than writing website descriptions - this is where I come in, with a range of experience writing for and managing websites.
MWC does its research. You can hire me to look into recruitment, competition, finishing liaison, article writing, company networking and visits, suppliers, new finishes...
There are many bodies that provide awards to leading companies in their industries, and MWC has experience of writing - and winning - several award nomination applications.
I provide consultation services (because I like a good chat) for discussing the many problems with electroplating, polishing, lacquering, and bronzing, and enamelling.
So you've had some issues with your tanks? Big deal, if you'd like a written report included with your consultation - so you don't have to remember what I said - that's not a problem.
At 23 I began in the jewellery trade as an Enameller, where I gained a Level 2 in Jewellery Manufacture. Two years later I turned my skills towards polishing, electroplating, lacquering, and bronzing, ultimately becoming a Finisher, achieving a COSHH certificate, and a Distinction in my Foundation in Surface Finishing with Electroplating. Once I'd stepped foot into the finishing shop, there was no going back.
During this time, I worked in Birmingham's world-famous Jewellery Quarter at Thomas Fattorini, working with high-end medals and regalia for six years, and I've worked on some interesting projects; please take a look at my LinkedIn and Instagram galleries for samples, including British Honours, Saddam Hussein's swords, and Mercury Awards.
I was a Metal Polisher at Hewines Engineering for six months after leaving the Jewellery Quarter, where I polished stainless caging equipment, learned basic TIG and spot welding, had band-saw training, worked on lasers, and some fabrication. In the sister company, Tansun, I worked on wiring for heaters, and soldering led string lights for sunbeds. I enjoyed and learned a lot whilst I was here.
Following this experience, I then worked as a Polisher and Electroplater (and also bronzer/painter) for Armac Martin, a luxury hardware company, where I employed chemical maintenance in the plant. They had trouble with their tanks and I chemically balanced them in one afternoon, and assisted my colleagues with better maintenance schedules.
Additionally to manufacturing, I'm a Master of Arts in Writing (studied for prior to joining the jewellery trade), and I've written and edited a wide variety: poetry, novels, reviews, articles, technical documents, reports, press releases, social media, websites, award entries, and many more.
I'm a freelance Writer and Editor with a decade of experience, including magazine editing for the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) at the beginning, and managing communications for Birmingham TreePeople (BTP) currently under the UFA programme.
Under McDermott Writing & Consulting, I also provide - in addition to aforementioned services - consultation services. I can help companies by providing visits and reports regarding electroplating, polishing, lacquering, and bronzing. This includes topics like cleaning, process line management, troubleshooting, and best practice.
Thanks to my combined skill-set, I provided self-employed work under MWC for izé, a high-end ironmongers that create bespoke door handles for architectural projects, and I was responsible for a collection of their writings, descriptions, social media management, and the in-house knowledge for finishing. I've worked with many architects and designers, as well as assisting with product development and suppliers. I also provide(d) services to companies such as SPS Brassware, 3v Architectural Hardware, and Oliver Knights.
If you'd like to know more about my skills or my business, find out what services I can provide for you or your company, or receive a quote for project or pro rata/hourly work, please message or email me: charlottemcdermott@live.co.uk
With over ten years of experience in the Writing industry and a Master's Degree, and just under a decade of experience in Manufacturing with a Distinction in Surface Finishing, I have honed my skills as a writer, editor, and metal finisher. I excel at creating engaging and informative content that captures the attention of readers, across all online and in-person formats, and with my expertise in electroplating, polishing, lacquering, and bronzing, my unique skill-set might be what your company is lacking, and looking for.
Thanks for visiting McDermott Writing & Consulting,
here's a poem from eons ago called Lampwork.
“Will you be alright in those clothes?
They said it's the hottest day in September
On record, today.” It's six in the morning
And I'm all in blacks and blues
(I'm all for greys and darker hues),
Absorbing the Autumn chill that blows
Through to my bones; I'm an abject member
Of a society that doesn't care for mourning,
Have to make a living in the sunshine,
Put on my happy-face, something benign.
It always begins to sound like bad prose
When I dissect and dismember
Every single little moment adorning
My life under the lampwork sky,
But in the end we're all brittle and fry
Like a baby chicken; we dispose
Of those six-o-clock-get-ups and remember
The dark skirt my dad gave me a warning
About in 'the hottest September', rained
All afternoon, lightning unrestrained.
It left my skin slick like enamel,
Through the ages cracked like glass.
In summary, I'm a woman in my thirties, with a strong work ethic and a passion for the little things. I have an extensive background in writing/editing, with a Masters Degree in Writing and having worked on presentations, magazines, and communications within social media, websites, as well as award applications and press releases. I also have almost a decade of experience in manufacturing, being a fully qualified enameller, polisher, electroplater, bronzer, and lacquerer.
I've operated gold, silver, palladium, rhodium, acid and cyanide copper, all nickel, tri chrome, hex chrome, electrolac, spray lacquer, and most types of bronzing. I have worked on projects such as the British Honours, Covid Stars, Saddam Hussein's swords, Mercury Awards, Lotus, Bentley, Glenfiddich et al, as well as writing for a London based architectural ironmongery company as their in-house finishing expert. I write poetry, play the guitar, and love bugs. Anything else?
